Might be a good cause for the gnome foundations, FSF or redhat to try to persuade apple to do this? In cases like this it's a good thing to have respected & known representatives. Since it's not yet at a point where lawyers or anything are involved, it wouldn't be to expensive for said foundations/companies?

Has anybody contacted Apple about this?  Given how much they've borrowed
from free software lately, they may be willing to grant some sort of
free license for spring-loaded folders to free software.
