intltool, autogen.sh and various version of automake

I've just found problems when building HEAD with both automake 1.4 AND
1.7 installed on the same system :

last intltool is using a macro (ac_aux_dir) which is not defined when
using autoconf 2.57 + automake 1.4 but works when using autoconf 2.57 +
automake 1.7. But since a lot of modules are not requiring automake >=
1.7 in their autogen.sh, many modules are broken.

Any idea on how to fix this in a clean way (ie probably on intltool
side) ?
