EN(US) and EN(GB)?! No, I would insist on having only TWO (2.0) characters.
Otherwise the applet size would be changing too much:

some applets [ RU ] some other applets
some applets [ EN(US) ] some other applets 
some applets [ EN(GB) ] some other applets 

Horrible! Or do you mean showing only country code when there are several
layouts for the same language? Then what about us, us_intl, dvorak - should they
be all shown as US?

Actually, there is a tooltip which shows full layout name - but it is only
tooltip, you know.
