vfolder issues in stable branch

hi,

sorry for comming up with that issue on the mailinglist but the
maintainer of this module hasn't replied for 10 days now so i think i
gonna try my luck here.

some weeks ago i realized that when compiling a new gnome from cvs
following all valid and gnome-2-0 related tags, that some applications
icons magically disappeared from the menu. i first thought that this may
be a broken installation etc. but it's not. i investigated into these
installations and they were ok, i reported bugs for these apps for but
the maintainers usually came up and said "i can't see any problems with
the app. it installs correctly, maybe it's vfolder related"

after some more investigation and discussions with some people on the
irc channel i finally came to the conclussion that indeed the new
vfolder code which got applied to the stable branch is the cause of
breakage.

as more and more vfolder updates are moving into the stable branch (a
branch that is meant to NOT break things) as more apps are disappearing
from the menu now and the usual reply from their maintainer is that the
desktop files are in the correct directory .../applications/...

now my question is. is it really a bug of the application or is it a
problem of the vfolder code. if it's a vfolder issue then why did it get
into the stable branch at all ? i can understand if it goes into HEAD
for new features, testing and fixing etc. but in a branch that is
already marked as stable and where it's purpose is to serve with fixes
and stability i somehow don't get that.

some apps that came into my mind that disappeared:

- magicdev capplet
- ghex

and probably some others that i may not know of yet.

related bugreports are here but since no one replies to them it
therefore makes no sense reporting them at all.
