Yes, I read all of it for GStreamer's GConf stuff, and I realize the 
effects of having more than one GConf and the effect on the schemas.  I was 
just up to today not aware of the fact that something was running 
the gconfd-2 installed in /usr behind my back - I just never bothered to 
check, or link all of the random problems I was having to it ;)

gdm is the most likely candidate at this point, since nothing much else is 
running at start-up.

In any case, to me this seems unexpected.  For me, gdm is supposed to be 
neutral to whatever graphical environment I'm about to run.  To all 
intents and purposes, it should behave the same as when I run startx with 
the right .xsession from initlevel 3, period.
The fact that it does start up gconfd-2 is very puzzling to me.  It 
shouldn't be doing that at all, and if libgnomeui is causing it, I think 
that's a bug that needs to be fixed.

I'm probably not the only one running garnome on a system that also has 
gnome2 packages, and with the new mandrake out and the new redhat coming 
up, I'm definitely not going to be the only one ;)

I don't mind doing the digging to find out wat can be done about this, I 
just need to be pointed in the right direction because I'm not clear on 
all of the gnome fundamentals yet.  I might even be wrong about my 
assessment of gdm, but if I am, please tell me.
