Hey,
Maybe it would be worth writing some release notes as to how you can
'manually' add new menu entries - perhaps by documenting how it all
works so the 'die hards' can tweak it to their own delight? [1]
It might work as a good compromise?

[1] by 'manually' I mean, documenting the .desktop file, .vfolder-info 
    file and the various file locations needed
