I think you're right about this. I had some idea that people typing 
command lines manually might want the symlink, but the symlink just
causes too much mess.

There will be a certain amount of pain getting rid of all the "no -2"
bugs in GNOME 2 - if people are OK with that pain, I will make the
change you suggest.
