Just a shot in the dark; could it be another variant of this:
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=4494
does unset SESSION_MANAGER solve the problem for you ? that's a
particularly pernicious bug for Gnome.
Then again - given it's emacs, it's prolly some extremely contorted
convolution of a code path that's creating a different problem.
