Newbie startup problems -- w/o inotify, either no indexing or looping

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

Background:
 1) I don't have root access to my machine, so I've installed the rpms
    by hand in a private directory tree and edited all the beagle-* scripts
    accordingly;
 2) Running Fedora Core 3, 2.6.12-1.1372_FC3, so no inotify yet;
 3) Home dir is on NFS, so I've used beagle-configure to remove it as
    a root -- only root is a partition on my local disk called /disk/b;
 4) extended attributes _are_ enabled for that partition:
     /dev/hdb1 on /disk/b type ext3 (rw,user_xattr)

Running daemon like this:

  usr/bin/beagled --deny-backend mail --deny-backend EvolutionDataServer --web-root /home/ht/.beagle/webroot/ --debug

I'm losing -- no indexing at all happens (I waited about 10 minutes,
machine was essentially idle).

Running daemon like this:

  BEAGLE_EXERCISE_THE_DOG=1 usr/bin/beagled --deny-backend mail --deny-backend EvolutionDataServer --web-root /home/ht/.beagle/webroot/ --debug

I'm still losing -- goes in to a loop filling the log file as follows:

gratefully received!

Thanks in advance for patience with newbie, I have searched archives
and website pretty thoroughly. There is one bugzilla bug [1] which
seems like it might be related, but it seems to be stalled . . .

In case it's relevant, here's the info requested in that bug:
