I upgraded to 2.3.0 on Gentoo (by hacking the 2.2.6 ebuild) in

I don't see anything different than before. (I.e., the
expansion of nicknames is done by means of a drop-down menu,
and you have to reach for the mouse to actually pick one.)
I checked the "About" menu item to make sure I'm actually
running 2.3.0, and I am. What am I missing?
Well...the new widget was implemented in the 2.2.6 source tree,
conditionally on Gtk-2.4 being installed. You probably were
already using it. The previous widget was a hacked GtkEntry that
offered the completions inline.
But in both 2.2.6 and 2.3.0 you shouldn't need to reach for your
mouse! Cursor-down gets you into the list of completions, and
Enter selects the highlighted one.
