First this is really nice to have a comprehensive review of Balsa.

Glad to hear that!

Could you run balsa -D and post the output here so we can see what is going on.

I try to isolate an issue specific error message, repeating every time I touch a borked feature:

Sorting messages:

cmd 'SORT (Date) UTF-8 1:692' failed, rc=8.
IMAP C: 18 SORT (REVERSE Date) UTF-8 1:692
IMAP S: 18 NO UTF-8 character set is not supported.

cmd 'SORT (REVERSE Date) UTF-8 1:692' failed, rc=8.
IMAP C: 19 SORT (Size) UTF-8 1:692
IMAP S: 19 NO UTF-8 character set is not supported.

IMAP S: 1a NO UTF-8 character set is not supported.

JWZ threading:

IMAP C: e THREAD REFERENCES UTF-8 ALL
IMAP S: e NO UTF-8 character set is not supported.

The UTF-8 issue looks like a regular pattern.

How can I fix it?

Joe
