Digging deeper into it (== reading rfc 2822...), this *is* actually rfc 2822 group syntax, but a malformed one, as the part ahead of the ":" (the name) must be either an atom or a quoted string.
Testing postfix directly using telnet with a properly constructed group address, it is accepted and delivered as expected/requested by rfc 2822. However, balsa makes from the envelope line
