Leaving that out was a design decision.
Lately there has been talk of enabling it, but only on explicit request.
Non local URLs are often abused to provide feedback to spammers, by
validating email addresses through loading images from cgi scripts, with
the email address as a part of the query string.
Nearly 100% of email with non-local images are spam. Just think, is it
worth having your email address confirmed in a spammers database, just to
be able to view spam?
