can you do:
$ ls /usr/lib/libgnomeui.*
on my system it produces:
/usr/lib/libgnomeui.a   /usr/lib/libgnomeui.so.32
/usr/lib/libgnomeui.so  /usr/lib/libgnomeui.so.32.14.1
and possibly

$ locate libgnomeui

you might want to also strace the final linking command (with -f 
option) to find out what libtool exactly looks for.
