A really good hint - somehow the crashes placed a huge number of toolbar 
items into the config file. The routine load_toolbars() (in save-restore.c) 
malloc's a fixed size array for the toolbars, and does not check for 
overflows. Attached is a tiny patch which fixes this. However, I could not 
(yet) find more information about the crash when replying to this one mail...
