One thing that is nagging me is balsas inability to scan mailboxes for new
mail, and its inability to rember which boxes have new mail and how many
messages there are in each folder. If I for example change the layout
options of balsa so it has to redraw the screen, it tends to forget how
many messages are in each folder. Upon startup, it doesn't check how many
messages are in each folder until I open it.
The solution to this is to keep all mailboxes opened at all times. This
does increase balsa's startup-time and memory consumption significantly,
but since I have plenty of memory and do not restart balsa very often, that
does not bother me too much.
What *is* bothering, though, is that balsa constantly refuses to open one
of the mailboxes. Unfortunately, this is a folder where system status
reports are collected and quite active and I *do* like to have it opened.
I've been confused about this for a while now, but now I've come up with
the reason. I picked the following from the balsa config (~/.gnome/balsa):
[Globals]
OpenMailboxes=karlskrona karlskrona teknik bos panik bb ddg whiskey staff
perl-nerds aktier 08-land nebug out-of-date cab2me hempc netch-announce
mail-system.errors Outbox duplicates Trash Draftbox Inbox Sentbox mis
Notice the first two mailbox names. They are the same. This is because I
have one mailbox called 'karlskrona' in the root directory, and I also have
one mailbox called 'karlskrona' in a subfolder called 'sysadm'. Balsa sees
no difference between these two boxes, and for some reason only opens the
mailbox in the root directory.
(note: 'root directory' above is *not* /, it is my mail root as specified
in balsa config 'MailDir')
Other than that, I really love Balsa. Have been using it for a couple of
months now, and the interface/functionality/stability combination is better
than any other mail client I have seen on the Linux/X11 platform. Keep up
the good work!
