PATCH: immediate date update, replaces previous patch

Hi,

I am attaching a new version of the patch
that makes the date column in index update
immediately after altering the preferences.

This patch replaces the one I have posted 1
(2?) days ago and fixes a number of 
problems in the original patch (Pawel,
thanks for pointing them out).
