I added this, but I'm not getting your problem. When I delete
the last message in a mailbox it selects the previous message
without any warning dialogs or warnings. When I delete the only
remaining message in a folder it doesn't complain either. 

Does this occur on all types of mailboxes? What type of
mailboxes are you using?
