MIME handling

Balsa has a fairly half-assed way of implementing MIME right now -- the
plaintext and message parts are shown, while everything else can be
saved. Is there some sort of MIME library that can make things more 
generic? There are files like /etc/mime.types, /etc/mime-magic, 
/etc/mailcap; and there are programs like metamail; but they all seem
out-of-date. So, does anyone know of how you're supposed to handle MIME
on Linux? Thanks.
