My understanding of this is that the XML processor used by Mozilla is the
expat processor by James Clark; Transformiix is built on top of that. For
any project it is always best to reuse a resource unless it is lacking in
the functionality required, thus expat was used. I believe that at the time,
libxml would have been in its very early stages (or possibly not around - my
history isn't great), and James Clark's involvement in XML and SGML
technologies was an encouragement that his implementation would be informed
and suitable.

I am quite prepared to believe anything else about that though, because my
memory on any matter beyond last week is very poor.
