Problems Compiling Pango

I'm having trouble installing the current version of pango (1.4.0) on a
Linux box.  I installed glib 2.4.0 successfully, but when trying to make
pango I get the following errors messages:

/home/mlake/pango-1.4.0/pango/.libs/libpangoft2-1.0.so: undefined reference to `g_type_instance_get_private'
/home/mlake/pango-1.4.0/pango/.libs/libpangoft2-1.0.so: undefined reference to `g_type_class_add_private'
/home/mlake/pango-1.4.0/pango/.libs/libpango-1.0.so: undefined reference to `g_unichar_get_mirror_char'

I haven't had any problems installing previous versions of glib/pango/gtk.
Can someone give me a clue as to what's going wrong and how I can get
around my current installation problems?
