Knowing about POSIX threads is good. Knowing how X works is also nice,
but not really necessary to learn GTK+. When I started with GTK+ a
couple of years ago, I found GTK+ *much* easier than plain X, Xaw, or
Motif. In about a week I made a working video file viewer from scratch
with timeout functions, color space conversion, etc.

Yes, GTK+ works with all X11R6 servers with all known window managers.
It's even better: if you do it right, your program will automatically
work on Windows, BeOS, and Linux framebuffer devices.
