At the bottom of the page, there is a small archive of little Gtk--
programs
I wrote to test out how certain things work ... among them is a color
enabled
scribble-simple ... it's in Gtk-- (C++) but you should be able to make
sense
out of the color handling code ...

Also, there are some classes in terraform itself that I wrote to facilitate
colormap creation/handling, but the archive of sample programs is
probably closer to what you want ...
