gtk-config

This is probably a dumb question but here goes. 

What is gtk-config and what package should is it found in.  I am trying to
compile and install some software that uses gtk, and during the
./configure step it says "gtk-config script installed by GTK could not be
found".

I'm pretty sure I have GTK installed, but maybe it is the wrong gtk
package....there are a few of them out there you know....
