GtkGL is falling out of support, so I don't know if you will
find other users who can answer your question.  Aosasa Shugeru
informed the writer of an alternative widget gtkglarea that
he is far from the net and can not support gtkGL.  

Perhaps it would be better to try the gtkglarea widget.  Janne 
Lof writes that widget, and it has all of the capablities of gtkGL
plus it is well documented.  From my experience with it the bindings
are far simpler to use.  In addition, there is a Gtk-- binding
for it available (at my web site).
