All you need is gtk-engines in addition to Gtk. Post the error messages
and people will help you get it compiled. All you should need to do:

ACLOCAL_FLAGS='-I /gtk/install/prefix/share/aclocal' ./autogen.sh
make
make install

If you want to pass args to configure (like --enable-debug or --prefix) 
you can pass them to autogen.sh.
