[Fwd: Re: Time to code?]

This was probably supposed to go to the list as well. I agree the the front page should static. Whatever we do with Gnotices (I believe people wanted to move off of Zope), that will probably be dynamic though. I think we should definitely stay free of Javascript as most people I know leave it turned off. Unfortunately the problem with Netscape 4.x disabling style sheets when Javascript is turned off will leave us needing to make sure that the page looks good with or without style sheets.

When we implement the new site we want to make sure we have a complex
logging device. We have had many questions while designing like What
browser? What platform? How many clicks? Average time spent on first page
etc... I think we need to make sure we have the following items are
addressed in the coding.

Clean, compliant HTML 4.0 Code (that is easy to transform to XML)
Internationalization
Logging

We also need to decided static vs dynamic. I think the pay offs of static
would far out weight the "ease" of dynamic pages. I suggest we have a small
web admin interface for people to post news and updates to the software map.
This page should be inaccessible to everyone except the maintainers. That
way we have a low level of traffic and those admin pages can be dynamic
without the extra load. When anyone enters data it fires off an email to the
Head admin(Joakim) he reviews it and decides to add it or trash it (you
could also put the internationalization step in here). Then this triggers a
script that "compiles" the affected page (a c program that reads in the
header and footer files and puts the content from the DB into a finished
static HTML page) and puts them on the live web server. I believe this would
be the best solution between ease and performance.

p.s. Be wary of JS and DHTML it can become pretty ugly quickly considering
the wide platform we are attempting to address

I've been merrily following the conversations waiting for the time to
code. I'm wondering if anyone has started anything because I think we
could at least get the infrastructure in place (error handling, site
template classes, etc). Any thoughts? I think we at least had a majority
vote for PHP before, and that's what I'd like to use.
