As far as i know...

I think gnome-vfs is based on pysical data location eg. host, directory,
etc and monikers are based on logical document centric location.
Monikers in COM even support accessing things not really stored as one
entity, for examle an single colum in a table.
Also monikers do expose an object instance with known how to handle the
data for that 'thing'. gnome-vfs is just concerned with the binary data.
