No it's not necessary to go get a later version of x than you have, because
garnome links against basic libraries that you should probably have on your
system already. Check the garnome web page for a complete list of
dependancies and you will be set.

 I ask this because my system is a Debian Woody running XFree
> 4.1 and so perhaps I will have to switch to Debian testing before
