It worked fine for a little bit and then started to fail again
consistently if I filter a group of messages including a spam message.
In fact, I can filter a single message that is spam and get the error
about appending to a folder.

And are you absolutely certain that the same doesn't happen with 2.0.1 at all?

Otherwise it will just be wasting time trying to debug this.  This patch will disable all the new code which was added since 2.0.1 was released, i'm pretty sure.

Looking back it looks like if the summary/index was built with 11/03
snapshot it works fine, and summary/index built with new snapshots fails
(the 11/03 snapshot failed for about a day and then worked for days).
What type of additional logging from me is useful?

Ugh, i dunno :-/.  Might have to start looking into robustifying the code to deal with this broken server response.  As far as i can tell this is definitely a server problem, since i'm pretty sure we're not doing anything wrong with our requests.  Assuming it is the extra-lines problem that jeff noted.
