Yup -- FC4. Tried it on a testbed, then on others. All seemed well for a
week or three; then yum updates started choking on things that ended in
.fc4 and produced dependency hells.

Trying to fix that, I started playing with pup, pirut, and yumex (all new
to me), trying to get something internally consistent. Bollixed three
machines in that process, of which one -- the testbed -- proved easily
fixable. Still trying to get the others to be able to login under Gnome
... (This is a fourth, without that problem.)

Looks a lot like my problem, all right. So I tried yum install dbus-x11
and yum update dbus-x11; neither got anything. Tried upper-casing the X;
still nothing.

So I tried yum whatprovides dbus-x11. Oddly enough, it expanded
that immediately to dbus-x11.i386 --and then went on a *long* hunt. It got
"Metadata file does not match checksum" over and over, and kept trying
other mirrors.

When it finally finished, it reported this :

Added 3031 new packages, deleted 0 old in 42.81 seconds

dbus-x11.i386 0.61-3 core
Matched from:
dbus-x11 = 0.61-3

dbus-x11.i386 0.61-3 installed
Matched from:
dbus-x11

dbus-x11.i386 0.33-3.fc4.1 installed
Matched from:
dbus-x11
[root localhost ~]#

Note that fershlugginer .fc4 in there : ten to one that's it, or part of
it. (Yes, FC5 still refused to open epiphany, with the same old :
"Startup failed because of the following error: Failed to connect to
socket /tmp/dbus-ew4gLGoRks: Connection refused")

So I did yum clean all, followed by yum remove dbus-x11. That took a
while, but the only dependency it wanted to remove with it was
desktop-printing. I told it yes.

Then I told it install dbus-x11 again. This time it looks as if it did
something other than it said -- but I may well be wrong. First it said it
downloaded dbus-x11-0.61-3.i3 -- then "Installed: dbus-x11.i386 0:0.61-3"
-- are those really the same??

Anyway, I went ahead and reinstalled desktop-printing while I remembered
to. Then I tried epiphany again -- and *still* got the error.

I sure hope all this tedious detail tells somebody something. It amounts
to an exercise in frustation on my end.

The only thing I can think of left to try are logging out and back in, and
if that doesn't work, rebooting. (Shades of M$!) Stay tuned ...
