This has been my solution in the past but I'm getting annoyed to the
point where I want to fix it or at least find out what the problem is.

I'm not so sure.  Can't we run the flash plugin in its own thread and
make it the lowest priority thread?  The OS provides lots of mechanisms
for managing process priority.

OK, I'll look into this.  BTW, do you know what the status of the GPL'ed
Flash plugin is?
