Python extensions can't manipulate the DOM yet. C/C++ would be the only
solutions.

Another option is Greasemonkey, which can trivially manipulate the DOM.
I've seen a Google-enhansing user script which puts similar numbers next
to links; maybe there's a Greasemonkey extension for Hint-a-Hint?

If Hint-a-Hint is slow, it's because it's been inefficiently coded. I'm
sure the behavior it provides can be instantaneous.
