I doubt many people go through this trouble. I use my bookmarks menu
extensivly (as I'm sure everyone on the list is well aware) and I have
yet to touch my gnome menu, other than to hack out the empty kde menu
at the bottom.

You should see mine, and everyone I know. I can think of a dozen people
off the top of my head, whose systems I've used in the past month, and found
their Favorites/Bookmarks menu in use and well sorted. I can remember asking
'which folder you want me to bookmark this under?'

You just can't discard a method based on what you see, neither can I. It's
fairly obvious that some use it, some don't. Because you don't, does not mean
most people don't use it either.

And this doesn't apply to topics?!

The problem is, initially, people don't understand topics. But most will already
have some concept of submenus, since that famous win95 Start button wedged its
way into our daily lives. 

Why can't we have both? Oops, galeon does have both. Hurray! I think I'm done
with this subject.
