I'd generally agree that it's pretty harmless to allow url
editing. The data to be lost is minimal, and you only lose it if you
find the url-editing feature, which you probably won't do unless
you're looking for it.

If the url is displayed (which seems sensible, since it's displayed in
the location bar, so we aren't exactly hiding the url concept), users
may as well be able to edit it.
