hmm - it worked for me first time.

Gnome Control Center -> Document Handlers -> File Types and Programs

then scroll to about the middle and look for "Microsoft Word Document" in the
left hand column, and then click on "Edit List" in the "default action" box.
You can add staroffice to that list in preference to abiword, then click ok,
ok again and quit control centre. Should work fine now.
