Personally I would just pick a layout, instead of complicating things.

My favorite layout is the book layout:

 1 2
 3 4
 5 6
 7 8 

With the rationale that it seems most natural (doesn't rely on obscure
spatial relationships), and is consistent with how the horizontal
layout is done:

 1 2 3 4
 5 6 7 8
