[Usability] Selection vs. selected text

Hello everybody,

I would like to get your opinion on
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=334060 .

This bug report tells about current situation with selecting text in GTK.
Namely, GTK allows not more than one selection globally, i.e. if you select
some text, and then select some text elsewhere (in another widget or
another application), then first selection disappears. This is made so
because GTK follows X selection model - the selected text *is* the
current content of PRIMARY clipboard.
The bug report claims that this is not right for everyone, and proposes
to add an option to enable "human-friendly mode" (no offense intended ;) ),
where one can have as many selections as he wants.
I understand very well that this mode is just wrong for those who
like/believes current GTK behavior is correct, and what I really would love
to hear is what people think about ability to have multiple selections.
Namely, leaving PRIMARY problem aside, is it correct that it is okay to want to be able to select text in one place, then select text in another place, then
return back and find the selection untouched? An example of such a thing
is the following: you select piece of text, switch to another window, select text,
press Ctrl-C, switch back, and press Ctrl-V to replace old selection.
I personally love such behavior, and it works very well for me.

What do you think?

Best regards,
Yevgen
