disk mounter

I am having some trouble with my disk mounter applet.

When I put a cd in the cdrom and click the diskmounter, a cd icon on the
desktop pops up.  Is there a way to stop this?  I don't muck like it
because I think that the icon is part of my troubles of unmounting the
disk (after I have closed all apps and try to unmount using the icon/disk
mounter applet/command line I keep getting 'device is busy').
