alpha channel

How do I set the alpha channel of a Gdk::Pixbuf to anything useful?
Then how do I display it, to make use of the alpha channel?
I assume render_to_drawable() ignores the alpha channel, whereas
render_to_drawable_alpha() uses the alpha channel?
