Paint window with color gradient

Hi all,
I've a Gdk::Window, and i'd like to paint a rectangle in the window. This is very easy, i can use Gdk::Window::draw_rectangle() function.
But what if i want to paint the window, with a color and with horizontal or vertical gradient.
