GNOME2 uses GTK+2, and gtkmm2 is the C++ bindings for GTK+2, but it
doesn't require the GNOME2 libraries. That's what gnomemm is for.

I'm not sure, but I havn't had problems running gtk1.2 and gtk2.0
applications next to each other.

I had my share of problems when starting to use gtk2 applications as
well. (Mainly concerned to themes, fonts and default key shortcuts). But
now I see nothing but benefits from gtk2 applications.

Anyway -- writing a new application from scratch in an "deprecated"
library such as gtkmm 1.2 seems silly to me. gtkmm 2 is much more
complete than gtkmm 1.2 and will make you experience less trouble.
