It's one of the things that's planned for 2.10. See:

You could cheat and "borrow" the latest proposed code from that bug  
(make sure you rename the objects/methods etc. since it's very likely  
that your program will break when 2.10 comes out otherwise).

It probably isn't going to be that long before it's finished so you  
might prefer to wait and use Gtk+ HEAD once it hits CVS.
