Font rendering question

Hello.

I'm trying to get text rendering working on this hardheld gizmo, and I
need to load the fonts on it myself and do all the rendering and
everything. So what I want is some simple way to generate an image with
all the ascii characters, and a list with the coordinates of the glyphs in
the image. Is Pango good for this, or should I look somewhere else?
