[GnomeMeeting-list] Re: Problems with V1.0.1 on Via C3/Fedora Core 1

Damien,

Thanks for your response.

Regarding GM crashing with Floating Point Exception upon receipt of incoming
call:

Prior to gettting your message, we reformatted the HD on one of the systems
(the one with GM 1.00 compiled from the sources) and reinstalled FC1 and
Alsa to get a "clean" environment for installing GM (losing the saved
bactrace in the process) . We then reinstalled GM 1.00 from the RPM's. It
still crashed, so, without saving a new backtrace, we removed the GM 1.00
and installed GM 0.98.5 from the FC distro.

Now we have GM 0.98.5 on one system and GM 1.00 (from RPMs) on the
other...and no crashes. I had expected the GM 1.00 to crash when receiving
a call, but no. They can both initiate and receive calls now without the
crash. I find it very disturbing when a problem goes away for no apparent
reason....I neven know when it will return!

I plan to reinstall GM 1.00 from the RPMs on the system with GM 0.98.5 and
see what happens.

In the meantime, some other questions:

On the system currently running GM 1.00....ALSA sound modules are installed,
but the GM Audio Device preferences list only OSS and Quicknet as potential
"Audio Plug-in". The program seems to function correctly with OSS selected,
buy why wouldn't ALSA be listed as a choice?

I am attempting to get the best possible video quality (30fps and highest
resolution) and audio quality. What are the likely bottlenecks and
tradeoffs in setting the codec parameters considering the two systems are
linked via a 100Mbs LAN with no contention?

I note that the H.323 spec provides for optional video resolutions greater
than CIF (320 x 240). Could GM be easily modified to offer the higher
resolutions?

Speaking of modifying GM....I have briefly examined the sources....there is
a lot there. Do you have any documentation on the design of GM? I
understand it was a thesis project...could I get a copy of the thesis? I am
working on a telepresense project and GM does much of what I need, and a
whole lot more. Any pointers you could provide for getting a summary of the
internals would be helpful. Of course I would credit your assistance.

Regards,

Les
