When starting up GnomeMeeting is trying to open and close the video
device to see if it is usable or not. If your system hangs during this
phase, it indicates a driver bug and yes the Quickcam driver is not of
very good quality.

Try without video and you will see if it still happens or not, but
always remember that you are under Linux and that under Linux,
user-space programs are not able to crash the system, only the kernel
drivers are able to do it.
