My automake is 1.4. No idea about this, but all gnome programs are
compiled with automake 1.4, perhaps your automake is too new. If you
have time, you can contribute a patch, it is perhaps an API difference
between both versions.

You need to install intltool, libtool, gettext, sdl, and gconf, + their
devel versions.

No, you just need to install the devel packages so that the automake
macros are available in your sustem.

expert ;))
