Sorry to disturb you again Matt.  Making static device nodes did help
but I claimed victory way too rapidly. Pilot-xfer did work... once ! I
launched the pilot applet... Not working. I removed the applet. 

I came back to pilot-xfer level: I got SegFault.  I tried to reboot (a
stupid Windo$ reflex,I should have killed a pending gpilotd probably).
Segfault disappeared but

1) pilot xfer
2) click hotsync

leaves pilot-xfer in a state where it is waiting for the "HotSync
button" to be pressed.

It looks like there are time races smewhere. I take ideas and I will
continue
to dig.
