Ah, jaysus.  Sorry to be a dolt.  The E2 isn't recognised 'out of the
box' in gnome-pilot 2.0.12.  Add a line to the
'/usr/share/gnome-pilot/devices.xml' file for the E2 product id.
The device id is "0830" and the product_id is "0061"
