syncing with Treo

I'm trying to sync a Handspring Treo via USB with gnome-pilot. I enter
/dev/ttyUSB1 (tried /dev/ttyUSB0 also) as the Port, select "Handspring
USB" as the Type, choose "Yes, I've used sync software with this pilot
before.", and press the HotSync button.

/var/log/messages (after doing `insmod visor debug=1`) says:

Mar 12 20:42:29 carter kernel: hub.c: USB new device connect on bus1/2, assigned device number 8
Mar 12 20:42:29 carter kernel: usbserial.c: Handspring Visor converter detected

and the Treo says:

The connection between your handheld computer and the desktop could not
be established. Please check your setup and try again.

Any idea what's going on?

Thanks.
